Controller software updates can improve compatibility or correct known faults, but an unplanned update may stop production if parameters, PLC files or licenses are not protected. Treat every update as a controlled maintenance task.
CONFIRM THE UPDATE IS REQUIRED
Record the current controller model, software version and the reason for updating. Check that the update package matches the exact controller, drive hardware and machine configuration. Do not install files obtained from an unverified source.
CREATE A COMPLETE BACKUP
Back up controller parameters, PLC or ladder files, tool tables, work offsets, macros, calibration data, licenses and production programs. Store a second copy outside the machine and verify that the files can be opened.
PREPARE FOR SAFE INSTALLATION
Schedule downtime, maintain stable power and do not interrupt the controller during installation. Photograph critical settings and note network addresses, axis directions and option codes. Keep the approved rollback package available.
VERIFY AFTER THE UPDATE
Before production, test emergency stops, homing, axis travel, spindle direction, tool change, vacuum functions and one low-risk sample program. Compare accuracy with the pre-update baseline.
